Cosy actions for your small business this autumn

Being totally honest, no matter the season, I love finding ways to feel cosy. I love adding little touches that bring warmth and comfort and making a small space feel snug.

This also expands into my business. I really enjoying adding cosiness to what I do, whether it’s how I create, how I market my work, the type of content I share with my lovely community and how I work with clients. A little cosiness can make all the difference.

There’s lots of ways to add a touch of cosiness to your small business (not just aesthetically) and this time of year is a perfect time to start.

Here’s some cosy actions for your small business this autumn…

Reflect and journal

I’ve got my candle lit, my cosy cardigan on, I’m already thinking about all the squash recipes I want to make and I’m getting my autumn TBR pile ready. As soon as autumn arrives, I’m in cosy mode!

Care to join me? Let’s add a little more cosiness into this by grabbing our journals and reflecting on the year so far and as we move forward into the final quarter.

How am I feeling right now as a business owner?
Take a few deep breaths to begin, think about where your mind is wandering to and begin to jot down the thoughts that come to mind as you reflect.

What are my hopes for the rest of the year?
It’s surprising how much this question can lift up our spirits, inspire us, encourage our next steps and bring positivity.

How can I make my goals feel easier, more manageable and doable as I move into the fourth quarter of the year?
In my opinion, small steps are the best steps. I find small steps create good habits, build consistency, help to remove overwhelm, are a good confidence booster and those small steps soon add up to amazing results.

What’s inspiring me?
It may be a book you’re currently reading, a quote or an article you’ve read, perhaps even a show you’ve watching. I love how these little nuggets of gold can inspire seasonal creativity and creation. (I shared a blog post all about where to find inspiration in the little things around you. You can read it here.)

Think about what the natural world outside is doing right now

This is something I find to be very comforting. I love looking for the little pieces of wisdom that the natural world gifts us. I love the feeling of being more in-tune with each season, letting each one guide, nourish and create a deeper connection.

I really appreciate how autumn signifies a time of harvest and celebration, of change and preparation, of release and gratitude and of slowness and rest. Autumn reminds us why change can be necessary and healthy.

Perhaps autumn will encourage you to let go of something within your business that may not feel aligned anymore. Or maybe there are certain ares of your business you would like to cut back on to make room for new growth, or to use the time instead to nurture what’s already growing. This might be a good time to reflect on what could be hindering growth within your business and to gently remove them.

Celebrate your business milestones

I wonder when the last time was that you acknowledged and celebrated your business milestones? Those wins, no matter how small, often very easily get lost or forgotten about in the busyness of day-to-day life.

So let’s take a moment to slow down, gather those milestones and celebrate them. Think about all that you have achieved this year so far - even the things you may feel are too small to celebrate, they’re most definitely worth celebrating.

It brings happiness, is a reminder for how far we’ve come, gives us motivation, it reminds us why we started in the first place and helps us to feel positive, while giving us all the warm fuzzies.

Nurture your community

Not only does this give your lovely community all the warm and cosy feels, but it does the same for you too. Nurturing connection is one of the most important things you can do for your business.

There’s lots of ways to do this, like simply replying to a comment and turning that comment into a cosy conversation - or with a question so you can get to know them better.

Saying thank you for a kind word lets them know you appreciate them - you could return the kindness by visiting their page and doing the same.

It could be sending a DM to thank someone for following you.

Perhaps someone shared with you that they were going through a tough time? Why not get in touch to ask how they’re doing now.

You can even create connection in your posts (on any platform) by asking a question at the end, or asking what their thoughts are on something you’ve discussed. It could be as simple as asking what book they’re currently reading, what they’re favourite cosy comfort food is, or their favourite place to visit in autumn.

Add cosy touches to your workspace

I love making my workspace feel extra cosy, and autumn feels like a perfect time to do exactly that.

It’s surprising at just how much it can help! Just the smallest, simplest touches can make such a big difference.

You could add some warm lighting like a small lamp or fairy lights. Or you could light a seasonal scented candle while you work. I’m currently going between two - one by Evoqua and another by St Eval.

I love to read during the day and in-between my work, so I usually like to keep a book close by - I’ve got a few autumnal themed ones ready on my TBR pile.

Another little something I like to keep close is the meditation & Calm Pulse Point Oil by Norfolk Natural Living - for extra calm and cosiness.

Emily Male from Generosity of Spirit recently shared this cosy post with “everything you need to reset your space, routine and creative energy”. I really enjoyed reading it and she has also shared a lovely autumnal playlist too.
