10 Nature Quotes That Have Inspired My Slow Living Journey

If you’ve made your way around my website, wandered through my little corners of social media, or you’ve subscribed to my Journal of Soulful Reflections (thank you so much by the way!), you’ve probably already noticed just how deeply I love nature.

It actually inspires so much of what I do, especially my work. Over the years, I’ve also been gently inviting more slowness into my days, which has wonderfully shaped both my personal life and the way I create. To me, nature and slow living seem to go so beautifully hand-in-hand.

I’m most definitely a collector of quotes. I love filling books with sticky tabs, saving little snippets in Notion, and scribbling down words that I want to remember. So I’ve gathered together 10 nature quotes that have inspired my own slow living journey. I hope you’ll enjoy them too, and that perhaps they might bring a little inspiration to your own path as well.

"If we had no Winter, the Spring would not be so pleasant." - Anne Bradstreet

Last year, I began a gentle journey of learning to embrace winter, to find the small joys that so often feel absent in a cold and darker season, and to rediscover a childlike wonder for the magic that only winter can bring. I find this quote another comforting way of looking at winter. Without this slow, slumbering season, spring wouldn’t feel nearly half as sweet.

"In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks." - John Muir

This is something I experience time and time again. Nature is full of beauty, magical moments, and endless little pieces of wisdom just waiting to be found. I’m always discovering something new and learning more about the natural world that I didn’t know before (it’s something that very much inspired my workbooks). What I love most is the peace that nature brings and how it never fails to leave me in awe.

“Where flowers bloom, so does hope.” - Lady Bird Johnson

For me, spring brings such a beautiful sense of hope. New life begins, and from the ground that feels so bare, shoots reach up towards the light and such amazing things grow from the smallest of seeds. All in nature’s own perfect timing.

It’s a lovely reminder too, that even in a world that can feel uncertain and scary, there is still so much beauty and goodness.

"Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” - Albert Einstein

I had a little orchid who wasn’t doing so well, so I started learning everything I could about helping it thrive. Things like enough light, pruning, growing authentically, the right environment, nurturing and removing what stands in the way of new growth all turned out to be so important. Funny how caring for an orchid can also teach you something about life!

It actually inspiredthis blog post, where I shared some of the lessons it taught me.

“The richness I achieve comes from nature, the source of my inspiration.” - Claude Monet

Much of my inspiration comes from surrounding myself in nature. This quote is a beautiful reminder that a small pause in the day can open our eyes to so much around us. A little stop in the middle of it all can wonderfully change the feel of the whole day. You never know what you might notice when you do.

“The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature and God.” - Anne Frank

Nature has an incredible way of instantly lifting my mood. I love to close my eyes, take a few deep breaths and focus on the sounds I can hear around me like the rustling of leaves, birds singing, a plane somewhere high above, the feel of a breeze on my skin and the lovely scent of flowers, and when I open my eyes I’m surrounded by so much beauty and any anxious thoughts simply melt away.

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature - the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.” - Rachel Carson

I’m always in awe of how resilient nature is. Myword for 2025 was courage, and at the time I was really moved by a story from Kew Gardens about an oak tree. During the Great Storm of 1987, 700 trees were lost, and a 200-year-old oak was lifted straight out of the ground and back into the hole that was created. The was thought to be permanently damaged.

But something so remarkable happened. The tree, which had already been showing signs of decline, began to recover and thrive. It reminded me how the challenges we so often face in life can lead to growth, perseverance and strength.

“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” - Henry David Thoreau

This quote encourages me to think about what each season brings. Spring brings renewal, summer brings abundance, autumn brings reflection and winter brings rest. I feel these are such beautiful and important words to think about as we journey through the year. It’s also a lovely nudge to enjoy the delicious seasonal goodness that each season also brings!

I recently shared a blog post all about spring seasonal living and the little things I’m loving, which you can readhere.

“An understanding of the natural world and what's in it is a source of not only a great curiosity but great fulfilment." - Sir David Attenborough

Over on my little cosy corner of Substack, in my Slow & Simple Notes series, I shared recently how making space for nature in everyday life has helped me to slow down no end, to pay closer attention to the world around me, noticing the little things I might once have hurried past and how it brings such wonderful calmness to my days. I love how the more we learn about nature, and immerse ourselves in it, it can enrich our lives in the most incredible ways.

You can read it here.

“I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures.” - L.M. Montgomery

I couldn’t resist adding an L.M. Montgomery quote, and it feels like the perfect one to end on. It isn’t strictly about nature, but nature is such a constant, beautiful presence in her writing that it still feels entirely fitting.

Nature brings some of life’s most wonderful, simple pleasures. I love wandering through the garden, admiring the blooms and breathing in the sweet scent of roses. I enjoy watching the birds from my favourite little nook, where I like to read and work. And I love standing outside as the sun warms my skin, and looking up at the cotton-wool clouds drifting slowly across the sky.

I’ve found that it’s slow moments throughout my day that bring the most beauty, meaning and fulfilment.
