Little Things That Bring Me Joy in Busy Seasons
When life feels full, I find so much comfort in the smallest things. They help me slow down, breathe, and notice those little sparks of joy during the busy days… especially around Christmas. As a small business owner, these tiny moments make such a difference - they ground me, bring a much-needed sense of calm, and add comforting pauses that help my workdays feel more gentle, balanced, and aligned.
So I thought I’d share a few of the little things that bring me joy, in case they inspire you to create your own cosy moments too. Perhaps you already love doing some of the following things, or maybe you’ll discover a new simple pleasure to weave into your day. Either way, I hope these gentle ideas offer a bit of comfort and remind you to slow down and enjoy the small, soothing moments whenever you can.
A warm mug of tea or hot chocolate
This is definitely a tiny pause that feels instantly comforting. It’s a lovely little moment to simply just be - whether you’re reading a few pages of a book as you sip, gazing out the window, or even stepping outside for a few breaths of fresh air while your drink warms your hands.
A gentle podcast that helps me unwind
It’s such a treat to simply settle in and listen to a podcast. One of my favourites is As the Season Turns by Ffern. I especially love the Found Sounds episode - I like to close my eyes and let myself be transported, imagining I’m right there, surrounded by the beautiful field recordings.
A few minutes of journaling or brain-dumping
Taking a little time to journal or jot down everything on your mind can be surprisingly helpful. It feels wonderfully therapeutic, and I always notice how much clearer my thoughts become afterwards. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a new notebook or journal!
I’m currently using the 52-week journal by Breathe. I love that it’s filled full of inspiration and encouragement, along with lots of beautiful illustrations.
A favourite magazine or book within reach
I love having a magazine or book close by. Getting lost in a good read is such a comforting way to refuel my creative energy. Reading always inspires me, and I find it incredibly relaxing - whether I’m being transported to another world, exploring a new place or time, learning something new, or simply revisiting a favourite story.
Fairy lights or warm lighting
I always find that fairy lights bring such a soft, relaxing glow, making my space feel extra cosy. On a busy day, they’re such a comforting welcome. We were also kindly given two battery-operated wax candles by our lovely neighbours, and you’d never guess they aren’t real! They flicker just like a real flame and look beautiful alongside the fairy lights.
A walk outside for some fresh air
Even just stepping out into the garden brings an instant sense of calm on a busy day. There’s always something new to notice, and when I venture a little further, I love observing how nature changes with the seasons. It’s also lovely to share a smile or a friendly hello, visit some of my favourite spots, and sometimes even take my camera along to capture the little details that catch my eye.
Taking a moment to stretch or breathe slowly
Pausing to gently stretch or take some deep breaths is such a simple way to reconnect with myself. It allows me to feel what my body needs. If I’m feeling a little frazzled, even a short moment of mindful breathing helps to steady my heart and soothe my thoughts, creating a sense of calm that lingers through the day.
I love to keep my exercise mat nearby, and I really love listening to a meditation by Balance with Sarah.
Fresh seasonal flowers
Fresh flowers always have a lovely way of brightening a room, adding a touch of colour and nature that lifts my mood instantly. I especially enjoy seasonal blooms, as they help me feel a gentle connection to the time of year, even when I’m indoors.
Keeping a few favourite things on my desk
Little things like a pretty notebook, a special pen, the books I’m reading, puzzle books, and a few cuddly companions always bring a big smile to my face. They mean I have something to pick up whenever I want a little pause, and small treasures at hand that never fail to bring me joy.
Which little comforts help you pause and feel calm during a busy day?
