What to Post on Instagram on Those “I Have No Ideas” Days

It can be so frustrating, can’t it? You know you need to show up online, but your mind feels completely blank and you have absolutely no idea what to post. The truth is, you most likely have so much amazing content that’s just waiting to be shared, but when you go to create a post, it’s like it’s all vanished into thin air.

Sometimes all it takes is some much needed encouragement and a little reminder that your creativity is still very much there. Small steps are all you need to get it flowing again, and that’s exactly what I’m here to help you with. So below, you’ll find a few tips for what to post on Instagram before the words “I have no idea what to post” spill out your mouth!

Behind-the-scenes moments

These can create such brilliant pieces of content. I absolutely love getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the people I follow. I love having a nosey and discovering little snippets of their day, finding out what their work set-up looks like, their fave helpful tools, what they’re currently reading in between creating, what hot beverage or snack they enjoy while they work, and even what’s inspiring them today - maybe it’s a quote or an article they’ve read. I could go on, but you kinda get the point!

These can create some really engaging content, give your audience such a lovely and more personal view into your day, while helping them get to know you better - which is always a huge bonus.

What you’re currently working on

This is a really fab way of giving your followers a little sneak peek into your work. It arouses curiosity, creates excitement for what you’re creating, gives your followers an exclusive look, and you never know where it may lead someone next… perhaps to your page and even to your website so they can discover even more about what you do.

It could be a snippet of a blog post you’re working on or a podcast you’ve just been recording. Maybe a piece of art inspired by the most beautiful blooms you spotted on your walk, or a few words from a chapter of your exciting new book that’s going to be out soon. It could also simply be an image of your favourite notebook and pen and the mind map you’ve just been brainstorming ideas for, or an image you’ve had taken as a small teaser.

It could even be a peak at the newsletter that will be arriving shortly for your subscribers… it may encourage your followers to subscribe if they don’t already. Taken a few photos that you’re now editing? Why not share some befores and afters - if you’re a photographer who’s in the middle of a gorgeous photoshoot, bring your followers with you by sharing a peak at photos or film a few moments from your session.

The story of a product or service

Storytelling is most definitely where it’s at! We all love a good story… I know I do! This is the perfect opportunity to share the story, or even a series of stories, of why you created a particular product - physical, digital or service-based. What inspired you? What encouraged you to begin? Perhaps a friend had been telling you for years that you should create this? Perhaps you sell beautiful stock photos - what was the reason behind this? Maybe a piece of art is extra special to you? Maybe you brought to life a particular service-based offering for a specific reason? You see where I’m going?

There’s most definitely a little hidden story behind every single piece of your beautiful creations. And I just know your followers are going to want to hear all about it.

Answering some FAQ’s

This is GREAT for sharing more about your products or services… and getting them in front of your followers too. Perhaps there’s a question someone has asked about one of your lovely creations, or someone has been curious about a particular part of your online service? This is the perfect opportunity to share the answers. It may be a question that someone else has and they can now find the answer in your post - which means they may then go straight to website to make a purchase!

Perhaps it’s about a certain material that you use, or what format a digital download is in. Maybe it’s about what tropes they will find inside your amazing new novel, or if you’re a photographer maybe someone has asked you what’s included in a particular package.

…And if you’ve literally just launched something, that’s fine too! Simply brainstorm a few questions for what someone may potentially ask, and then answer them. Or more than likely, you’ve already got a list of FAQ’s over on your website that’s just waiting for you to repurpose.

A personal reflection

Read a quote today or a sentence that’s made you stop and think? Maybe you’ve just finished reading a book that you ABSOLUTELY loved? Did you notice something on your walk that made you pause? Did something funny happen today? Did you discover something amazing online or in a shop? Maybe you have a chronic illness and you love helping to raise awareness? Perhaps something didn’t go quite to plan, but instead it led to something even better?

Have you captured a moment today on your camera for a particular reason? Learnt something new today - or about yourself? Maybe you’ve celebrated a few small wins lately or one giant win? Perhaps you’re in a season of transition? Maybe you’ve just discovered something that’s incredibly helpful and you just know that your online community will find it helpful too?

All of these are wonderful and simple things you can easily share that someone also may resonate with, find encouraging, and it could be just what they needed to hear. They don’t even need to have necessarily happened today, it could be a reflection from a few days ago, last week, or even last month. Or it may be something that happened a few years ago and this year marks a 5-year anniversary.
